Dear ________, Are you as outraged as I am at the tragic poisoning of the entire city of Flint? The residents of Flint have struggled, for more than a year, not only for their basic human right to clean water, but against the indifference, incompetence, and inaction of the officials who were supposed to ensure the health and well-being of the people. Sign the petition to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Legislature: Clean water is a human right. Replace Flint's toxic water pipes! Weighty books will be written about the myriad ways government failed the people of Flint, but the basic facts are already clear. The regulations for testing the drinking water in Flint were too lax and easily subverted. Authoritarian enforcement of "fiscal responsibility" trumped basic humanity. Politicians denied accountability for as long as possible. And in a colossal case of "blame the victim," the entire city of Flint -- where the majority of residents are people of color -- was belittled, bullied, and treated like a nuisance while its children were being poisoned. Not only that, but even while their water was being poisoned, Flint's citizens were being forced to pay the highest rates for water in the nation -- more than $500 per year above the national average.1 Everyone impacted by this horrific, man-made public health disaster deserves to know they don't stand alone. They deserve to know we stand with them, that we'll join their call for justice, accountability, and action. Will you take a stand with the people of Flint by adding your name to the petition to restore their basic human right to clean, safe water? We need to make sure our federal, state, and local governments do a better job of protecting the health and safety of the people -- no matter the color of their skin or how much money they have. To do that, we must take back our democracy from the influence of corporate polluters and billionaire kingmakers.
We'll keep fighting to protect all communities from injustice, but in the meantime, let's help the people of Flint get safe water again. Thanks for speaking out for justice, Michael Brune Executive Director, Sierra Club P.S. After you take action, be sure to forward this petition to your friends and colleagues!
