Subject: [CAN-talk] hydropower
To: Can-talk <can-talk@listi.jpberlin.de>
Dear all,
A new study will come out next week and suggest that presently (large scale) hydropower emits about averaged 1.3% (0.7 Gt) of global greenhouse gases (0.3 to 1.2 Gt GHG), mostly methane from rotten submerged biomass or decaying algae boom originating from water flows into reservoirs carrying too much of washed-off nitrogen fertilisers.
http://www.climatecentral.org/
Hydropower provides worldwide about 3800 TWh electricity annually, about 16% of all; and global electricity production emits about 13.5 Gt CO2 (IEA,2015) – so hydropower contributes to up to 9% of all power sector emissions and 5% on average.
Now as a considerably set of large hydro power stations are in the pipeline particularly in developing countries, the perception that hydropower is close to zero GHG pollution as assessed by the IPCC in its Special Report on Renewables in 2011, is obviously wrong in case this study is correct.
Cheers
S
