Dear ________, We're witnessing, in real time, the extinction of polar bears: Climate change is literally melting the bears' habitat from under them. Food is getting harder to find. And still, if Big Oil wins we will soon see expanded drilling in the Arctic... If Big Oil is green-lighted to drill in the Arctic ocean, we'll be putting these beautiful creatures in danger. You and other Sierra Club supporters are all that stands in the way now. Facing the extinction of this majestic bear, will you help fund our campaign to save it from extinction? Yes! I'm ready to save struggling polar bears from extinction and help stop Big Oil's efforts to drill for dirty fuel in the Arctic. (Act by June 26, ________, and we'll send you an adorable plush polar bear as a thank-you for your gift of $39 or more!) The Beaufort Sea in Alaska's Arctic is a crucial home for polar bear populations, and it's also ground zero for climate change: Over the past 40 years, Alaska has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the country. New data from Polar Bears International predicts that two-thirds of all polar bears will be gone by 2050 if these warming trends continue. Offshore drilling will fast-track polar bears' extinction by exacerbating climate change, making food more difficult to find by continuing to ratchet down on polar bears' hunting season, critical for bears' survival. And that's to say nothing of what would happen if there's an oil spill in the Arctic. Oil companies don't know how to clean up a spill in ice-filled waters. It's never been done - which means all living beings in the Arctic, including people reliant on the ocean for food right alongside the polar bears, wouldn't stand a chance. Polar bears need us - please, rush your gift to the Sierra Club and help us reach our $40,000 goal before it's too late. There is hope, if President Obama takes a stand and removes the Arctic Ocean from the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) five-year plan. Pressure from folks like us protected the Atlantic coast, and we can do it again in the Arctic. Your support, right now, will help us pull out all the stops to make sure he stands strong against the oil industry and saves polar bears. All around the world, critical protections for already-imperiled wildlife are being threatened. And since I last wrote you yesterday, 536 people have stepped up to help. Can I count on your help, too? Please, ________, protect polar bears and all majestic creatures that call the Arctic home: Make a gift right now. Polar bears are already on the brink of extinction. You can save them by standing with us now. Thanks for your support of polar bears and all threatened wildlife, Michael Brune Executive Director |
