Dear friend,
Forests of beautiful white aspen trees, serene beaver ponds, centuries old Engelmann spruce that reach for the sky -- and coal roads and methane vents spewing toxic pollutants into the pristine wilderness.
The U.S. Forest Service is considering letting Arch Coal, the second biggest coal company in the country, bulldoze thousands of acres of publicly-owned roadless forest in Colorado in order to mine more than 170 million tons of coal and create hundreds of methane well pads.
Tell the Forest Service to protect our forests and keep taxpayer-owned coal in the ground where it belongs!
If the Forest Service plan goes forward, Arch Coal would have access to more than 170 million tons of coal with the potential to release up to 486 million tons of carbon pollution. In fact, the Forest Service's own analysis found that this carbon pollution could cause up to $13 billion in costs to the world's economy and environment.
Before the Forest Service approves this loophole it must consider the impact on the environment -- and it's clear that this deal is all risk and no reward. Take action now to tell the Forest Service to stop climate disruption at its source by keeping the coal in the ground!
The mine that Arch Coal wants to expand already releases millions of cubic feet of methane -- which is 86 times more damaging to our climate than carbon dioxide over a 20 year period -- directly into our atmosphere every day. Not only would this loophole mean more dangerous methane emissions, the construction in this pristine forest would damage the habitat for countless animals including black bear, elk, goshawk, lynx, and trout.
We can stop climate disruption at the source and defend our public lands by ensuring publicly-owned coal and the accompanying methane stay in the ground. Send your message to the Forest Service now telling them this loophole is not worth the risk.
Thanks for standing up to Big Coal,
